Hosepipe ban and flood warnings for the SAME region as heatwave and storms combineQuite right too. Surely if there's a risk of flooding using a hosepipe will only make it worse, if my bathroom were flooded I certainly wouldn't start running the taps.

Seriously, though, they have a point (daft as it may sound).
Hard, baked earth can't absorb a lot of water that falls too quickly. It has to go somewhere.
What these areas need is constant, light rain, so the earth absorbs it.
Depressingly JM has beaten me to the smartarse comment :-(
We had water come through the light fitting today.
That's nothing, James. We had water come through the taps !
