A Cunning Plan

The BBC has learned* that David Cameron set up a secret unit within Whitehall to mount covert economic operations against Colonel Gaddafi.
The UK has been conducting sabotage against the Gadaffi regime? That certainly explains this photograph:

Brilliant, yet diabolical.

* I believe "has learnt" means "has been leaked by spin doctors".

More Libyan Health Miracles

If you thought that the miraculous lifespan of Lockerbie bomber Al Megrahi was an impressive testament to Libya's health service then you ain't seen nothing yet. Hana Muammar Gadafywho was killed in the bombing raid ordered by Ronald Reagan in 1986, has recovered from her tragic death and is now working as a doctor in the country!

Send Weapons To The Libyan Rebels

Apparently sending weapons to the Libyan rebels is a bad thing.

Whereas bombing the Libyan regime is fine.

Wouldn't we save a lot of time and money if we simply armed the faction that we want to win a conflict rather than actually getting involved ourselves?

Plus it is what Gadaffi did to use when he supplied the IRA with semtex.

???? World peace

Tell me if I am missing a step here:
  1.  Colonel Gadaffi has WMD programme. Is a bastard to Libyan people.
  2. Colonel Gadaffi agrees to disband WMD programme. Remains a bastard to Libyan people.
  3. NATO commits itself to regime change because Colonel Gadaffi is a bastard to Libyan people.
  4. We ask Iran, Pakistan, North Korea & Syria who are all bastards to their own people to give up their WMDs.
  5. ????
  6. World Peace
Whilst I do see why protecting Benghazi from a massacre is a worthwhile objective extending the mission to depose Gadaffi- an admittedly disgusting creature- sends out a message to all of the other states in the international rogues' gallery- "Don't give up your WMDs under any circumstances or you will be annihilated".

Quote Of The Day

On the Libyan war:
We've gone to war to support the rebels, but without the slightest idea who they are and what they're trying to do - it's the geo-political equivalent of voting Lib Dem.

Libya

Reasons to oppose the bombing:
  1. It will probably escalate into a full scale intervention.
  2. The rebel stronghold is in an area notable for it's support for Islamic fundamentalism.
  3. Gadaffi hasn't bothered us lately.
  4. We have no money or equipment for unnecessary wars.
  5. It isn't our business.
 Reasons to support the bombing:
  1. Without it Libya's rebels will be massacred.
  2. Gadaffi's regime has sponsored terrorism in the past.
  3. It makes the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize committee look like even bigger chumps.

Libya

As the relaease of Megrahi demonstrated, the UK is more interested in Libyan oil than in treating the regime as it deserves. Therefore I assume that the government's new hawkishness means that they believe Gaddafi is finished and will not survive the revolt against him. Either that or the coalition is so much more principled than the last government that they don't care about BP's investments.

Still for all the criticism of the cosying up to Gadaffi over the years, surely the regime would be far more dangerous if it still had a WMD programme.
