Residents and pirates in the Somali port of Haradhere told the Associated Press that the boat, which was carrying eight men, overturned in a storm after dozens of pirates left the Sirius Star following a two-month standoff in the Gulf of Aden.

Local sources said that the ransom payment held by the eight pirates on their get away boat had been lost at sea.
It would be particularly fitting if it were the weight of all the cash that caused the boat to capsize.

Wrong.
The pirates are hardly like to get back to Somalia and give interviews on TV are they? Rule number 1 after pulling off this sort of stunt is to fake your own death.
NB, that's what Captain Jack Sparrow would have done in their situation.

The more pirates who 'drown', the more left for the 'survivors'. Think on the fate of the six men who landed with Billy Bones on Skeleton Island to bury treasure.
Both suggestions, faked deaths or being murdered by other pirates, sound plausible.
