Blimey that's weak.

I think the polls showed 10-15% of people were 'uncomfortable' with a black president, and so I don't see why it is strange therefore to imagine a larger proportion of those opposed to him would share those views. The trouble is deciding where that line is drawn; however I don't think it's that difficult to make your mind up about some people - the sheer lunacy of some of the protestors over healthcare and their willingness to believe bizarre conspiracy theories all points in the same direction.

There have been crazy conspiracy theories about white presidents before so I don't see how that proves anything. In fact I would be willing to bet that most of the people who insist that Barack Obama is a secret Muslim who was born in Kenya also believed that Bill Clinton had Vince Foster murdered.

Well a far higher proportion of southern whites believe Obama was born in Africa than the country at large, so perhaps it is the case that that section of the population is just more prone to conspiracy theories, but it'd be a bit weird to dismiss the idea that there was a fair sized proportion of racists.

...and that the proof of both those things is held at Area 51!

Given the huge and unprecedented black turnout for Obama, it would, wouldn't it..?

Oh, that wasn't what you meant? :)

There probably are, but I doubt it figures highly among the reasons for opposing Obama. And there are supporters of Obama who go through great mental contortions to discover racism in the absence of any evidence.

I'm sure that's true, but that kind of illuminates my point - it doesn't make it right to go through great mental contortions to deny racism when there's plenty of evidence (though I understand it might be a reaction to those who see racism everywhere).

Julia - sorry I am not up with 'net lingo. What does ":)" mean? That one's run out of things to say?

I guess you don't text either then?

It's a smiley face. It indicates, in this instance, that I'm laughting at you.

And I never run out of things to say... ;)

PS: that was a wink
